Virgin Media flashing green light: Hub 3, 4 and 5 checks

Identify the hub and the indicator before restarting it. Green flashing can mean an update, startup or WiFi pairing, depending on the model and pattern.

By Appliance Faults · Reviewed

Quick answer

A slowly flashing green light on Virgin Media Hub 4 or Hub 5 means a software update is downloading. On Hub 3, the WiFi, internet and power lights have different meanings. Identify the indicator and allow an update or normal startup to finish before treating the light as a fault.

For Virgin Media Hub 3, Hub 4 and Hub 5. Do not apply the Hub 5 light table to Hub 5x: the official green-light guide checked for this page does not provide a Hub 5x light key.

Which green light is flashing?

Match the whole pattern, including which indicator is lit. A green flash alone is not a diagnosis of a cable fault.

This can occur during startup or WPS device pairing.

Check whether the hub has just started or someone pressed WPS. Use the service test if your connection still fails.

Hub 5Solid green, not flashing

The hub is in modem mode and does not broadcast its own WiFi.

If you intentionally use your own router, check that setup. Do not confuse modem mode with a downloading update.

Has the hub just started or begun an update?

For the Hub 3 startup pattern above, let the full 5–10 minutes pass. If you switch the hub off again, it has to start again when power returns.

For a slowly flashing green update light, Virgin Media does not give a fixed total download time in these light guides. The stated few minutes refers to rebooting after the download. Do not treat 10 minutes as a universal update deadline.

If you still cannot get online

Use Virgin Media's service test to check the connection and any area issue. Check whether every device is affected: if only one phone or computer has trouble, Virgin Media recommends restarting that device.

For a broader connection problem, check the cables are firmly connected. Once normal startup or an update has been ruled out, follow Virgin Media's restart sequence below.

  1. Switch the hub off at the wall socket.
  2. Wait 10 seconds, then switch it on again.
  3. Allow 5–10 minutes for the hub to reboot before checking the connection again.

Do not confuse a restart with a factory reset

The reset pinhole restores the hub's original settings. Virgin Media warns that changes such as a different WiFi password must be applied again afterwards. The ordinary restart above does not use that pinhole.

Check the light pattern and service-test result before considering a reset. An update indicator by itself is not a reason to erase your settings.

Have a Hub 5x or a different light pattern?

Use Virgin Media's service test or ask support to interpret the exact model and pattern. The official green-light selector reviewed for this guide lists Hub 3, Hub 4 and Hub 5, so it does not establish what green flashing means on Hub 5x.

Keep the model name in your support notes. Similar names are not enough evidence that two hubs share the same light meanings or settings.

Frequently asked questions

Does a flashing green light mean my Virgin Media hub is broken?+

Not by itself. Verified green-light patterns include startup, software updates and WiFi pairing. Match the model and indicator first. Use Virgin Media's connection test if the light persists and you cannot get online.

How long should the green light flash during an update?+

Virgin Media says the hub takes a few minutes to reboot after the software download finishes. Its model-specific green-light pages do not state a fixed total download time. The separate 5–10 minute guidance refers to startup or a routine reboot.

Why is my Hub 5 solid green with no WiFi?+

Virgin Media identifies solid green on Hub 5 as modem mode. In that mode the hub does not broadcast its own WiFi, and you may be using your own router. This differs from a slowly flashing green software-update light.

Can I use these light meanings for Hub 5x?+

No. The official green-light selector checked for this guide does not provide a Hub 5x light key. Use the service test or contact Virgin Media with the exact model and indicator pattern.
